What Have I Lost?

I have lost the chance to live

In fear, at the mercy of bad people

Who mean you harm

I have lost the chance to live

Being hungry, surviving on scraps

From the tables of strangers

I have lost the chance to live

Alone and unloved, without the human touch

Of flesh and blood

I have lost the chance to live

In ignorance, illiterate in a world

Where beauty is revealed in words

I have lost the chance to live

At war, seeing those you care for

Burned and slaughtered in foreign fields

I have lost the chance to live

In pain, in a body or mind unfit

For acts of unspeakable pleasure

I have lost the chance to live

In chains, denied the right to think

Forced to worship false gods

I have lost the chance to live

Unaware of my good fortune

In the light of those whose

Suffering defined me
