Biodegradable by Elizabeth Parkes

The world of childhood degraded.
Lost, willow, alder, ash;
words with long roots
to withstand the mind’s drought,
the bungee-jump of modern thought
from tolerant to compulsory.

Adder, stickleback, lark
the winged imagination
drawing from water, air and moor
all that the growing spirit needs
to expand vision beyond, and beyond
and beyond, the brutal bullet point.
